Donor Advised Funds

A donor-advised fund (or DAF) is a tax-advantaged investment account designed to support causes you care about. DAFs combine the ease of a charitable savings account with the flexibility of strategic giving.

A Donor-Advised Fund (DAF)  is like a charitable savings account. You can contribute cash, securities, or other assets to a DAF and receive an immediate tax deduction. Donors can contribute to the fund over time, which is managed by a DAF custodian (custodians include Fidelity Charitable, community foundations (like Act for Alexandria or Arlington Community Foundation), Vanguard Charitable, Daffy, and many others).

An increasingly popular charitable vehicle, DAFs are an excellent way to both simplify your charitable giving and facilitate your strategic philanthropic goals. Once you've funded your DAF, you can recommend grants and direct philanthropic gifts towards the charities of your choice now or in the future when you're ready which provides flexibility in your giving strategy and may offer increased tax benefits.

Three Simple Ways to Give Through Your DAF

  1. Recommend a grant today. Make a one-time grant to Alexandria Library Foundation and support programming at your beloved library.

  2. Set up recurring grants through your DAF to provide ongoing support for the programs and services that enrich the educational and cultural lives of Alexandrians.

  3. Create your legacy. Name Alexandria Library Foundation as the beneficiary of all or a percentage of your DAF so your generosity continues to keep our public library free and accessible for generations to come.
